Macunaíma

Book illustration

EN Macunaíma was written in 1928 by Mário de Andrade (1893-1945), a versatile intellectual from São Paulo. He made outstanding contributions to many fields, being a writer, critic, musicologist, and a traveler that had profound knowledge about the complex and diverse Brazilian culture. Naomi Jaffe, who commissioned this illustrated edition, wrote about the text: “Initially written as a “joke” during only 6 days, in a small farm in Araraquara (SP), it didn’t take long for Macunaíma to become one of the most spoken, analyzed, overturned and also misunderstood book of the Brazilian literature history. The novel (actually a rhapsody, as Mário de Andrade named it) became the typical narrative of the Brazilian Modernism, of Anthropophagy, the movement created by Oswald de Andrade (1890-1954) and, quickly, a classic in the literature history in the Portuguese language.”

The illustrations are colorful and full of information, emphasizing the essence of the text: a collage of the innumerous elements and aspects of the Brazilian culture.
